Good Friday March of witness and Passion Plays for Bury St. Edmunds 6th April 2007

On Good Friday 6th April 2007, Christ Church Moreton Hall along with Churches Together in Bury St Edmunds & District will present three Passion Plays and a March of Witness. Beginning at the Cathedral at 10:30am, the first play is of the last supper and capture of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Then up to 1200 people will follow the captured Jesus and his Roman guards through the streets of Bury St. Edmunds to the Butter market. The second play, which is a re-enactment of His trial, will take place there. Then still under guard, He will carry his cross to the Abbey Gardens followed by the crowd. Located in the ruins of the old Abbey, the third play shows His Crucifixion and entombment. A cast of 40 authentically dressed first century Roman soldiers and town’s people will take part.

We produced this event for the first time last year when we expected 800 people and 1200 attended. Estimates of between 1500-2000 are expected this time. Produced by the people of Bury St. Edmunds, we are attempting to bring back to life the medieval mystery plays, which were once a regular event in the town.
