Letter from the Minister for October

Doubtless we have all seen the images on our televisions of the plight of those in Burma. Our hearts go out to both the native Burmese and all the minority groups in that country, many of which have been suffering genocidal attacks by the Generals for over 20 years. This corrupt regime, which spends more on a wedding for the leader's daughter than it does on its health service, cannot be allowed to continue in this modern age. I was in awe of the courage of the protesters who are look to us to do everything we can to help them, and yet are making their stand without resorting to violence or hatred.

But the people who impressed me most were the Buddhist monks. By now thousands have been imprisoned and probably more than a hundred have been beaten to death. What fearlessness and what integrity they have.
Who can say now, religion has no place in politics. These people could easily stay in their monasteries and say: "It is nothing to do with us." But no, they go out and face injustice head on. They are not just with the people, they are leading the people.
In this country it was religious people who helped found our education system and our health service. It was religious people who helped democracy develop in the land and by democratic means abolished slavery. It was the Methodists in particular who helped form the trade union movement. And along the way there were many protests, beatings imprisonments and sadly deaths. But on all these issues they won though in the end, by making the same sort of stand these monks are making today.

The people of Burma only want what we have and have taken for granted to so long. Please don't forget them. Pray and write to your MP and to the Burmese embassy. Who knows we too could see another miracle as good as when the Berlin wall came down. Lets hope so.

Youth Clubs
It is great to see that both the church youth club "Delta" and the new youth clubs are doing so well. Even though both the senior clubs meet on the same night, Wednesday, our youth workers found our facilities over flowing. Well done all involved. It is good to see the young people respond so well to what is now on offer.

Harvest at Christ Church
At 10:30am on Sunday 7th of October we presented a new Harvest service called "Living Water". It was an All Age multimedia worship service, with songs, a quiz and a special message. A collection was taken which will go towards the water projects in Darfur. It was good to see those of you who came to service.
