Sermon Text for Civic service 19th July: Esther

It may seem strange to have two readings from the Old Testament and a story of a political power struggle that happened nearly 3000 years ago. Considering what a set of high tech, future proof, set of Mayors and councillors you all are. I do hope you have turned off your mobiles laptops, I pods and blackberry’s; by the way no texting or twittering while in church. There you are ...with your hyper modern state of the art offices and assembly room; just one question? Have you got the air conditioning fixed yet? It was a bit sticky last time I was there.

Given all that modernity, why go for something that almost reads like a fairy tale. Well this story is not so far away from our lives today, as you might think. King Xerxes presided over an empire that stretched from India to Egypt and from southern Russia to all of what we call Arabia. All of modern day Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Turkey were completely inside it. The Jews had lost their homeland and lived all over the empire that had conquered them. Many had come to the capital Susa and had done very well, as traders, bankers, scribes and court officials. Susa was not too far from present day Baghdad.

Funeral Services

As your local parish church, Christ Church, Moreton Hall has a highly trained team of clergy available to contact a range of services, including funerals. When your Funeral Director calls, he will always advise you that we are available to help. In addition to taking the service, we are available to visit you ourselves to ensure that you get the service you want and are supported pastorally after the service if you wish.

Asking for the clergy does not mean you have to have the service in church. Most of our services are taken at the Crematorium or at the Cemetery. While we use services as authorised by the Church of England, we are also ecumenical, which means there is a great deal of flexibility in what you can have when we take your relatives service.

You will also find that our fees are not expensive and are governed by national regulation. If you wish to find out anymore about the services we offer, please see the rest of our website or contact us. Everyone who has had a funeral by the clergy of Christ Church, Moreton Hall has found the experience helpful and supportive. Many have said it enabled them to deal with their grief and reconstruct their lives in a good and positive way.

Baptism and Confirmation

On the morning of Pentecost, Sunday 27th May, we will be holding a service of Baptism and Confirmation. We already have several candidates for both the Confirmation and Full Immersion Baptism and we would like to invite you to come along and share this very special day with us.

If you are considering getting confirmed or baptised in the future, please see Jonathan Ford to discuss what is involved.

Baptisms

Christenings and Dedications
When people have a baby they feel it is right to come to Church to give thanks for the birth and asking God's blessing.
At Christ Church we are keen to welcome children for such services.
All Baptisms and Dedications take place on Sunday Mornings at 10.30am in the main Service, on the first Sunday in the month.

We only cater for a maximum of two families at a time in each service, however, if you would like your child Baptised with others this can be arranged.

Baptism is a serious Christian commitment.
We want you to understand that commitment and feel at ease in the Church.
You will find a warm welcome at our Family Services, in the months leading up to your child's Baptism.

  1. Contact the Church Office for more information.
  2. Give your name, address and suggest several dates as we have many enquiries.
  3. We will arrange your preparation evening with you.
This involves showing a Video and going through the Service with you.
Godparents are welcome to attend. They must be over 16 years of age and Baptised.

If you feel Baptism or Christening is not for you and you would like either a Service of Dedication or Thanksgiving, please contact us and this will be arranged.

Belivers Baptism
If you are no longer a child and are not Baptised, please contact us if you would like an Adult Service.
If you require Believers Baptism by total immersion, we have a Baptistery for this Service.

If you would just like advice on the best service for you or your child, please contact the office and the Minister will call to discuss it with you.
